Donald J. Everitts

8/1/1923 – 3/7/2006

Donald J. Eventts was born August 1, 1923, in Lavoye, WY passed away surrounded by his family and friends on March 7, 2006, following a long battle with cancer.

He grew up living in tents in the oil camps of Wyoming and California. Because of the constant moving, he attended six different elementary schools, graduating from Kern County High School at the age of sixteen, followed by graduation from Bakersfield Junior College.

After graduation, he joined the United States Army, and eventually served in England and France. After the war, he received an Honorable Discharge and returned to pursue his education. While attending UCLA, he met his future wife Alice on a blind date. He later transferred to the University of California at Berkeley, where he and Alice were married during Spring Break, 1948. He graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering, that spring. Among the professional organizations to which he belonged were the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the American Petroleum Institute. He was employed by Marathon Oil Company, Aerojet General and the State of California during his lifetime. While with the state, he was the Chief of the Extractive Development Program for the Mineral Resources Department of the California State Land’s Commission.

After retirement in 1990, Don and Alice moved to Auburn, CA where they have since resided. Don was active in many service organizations throughout his life. He enjoyed helping people help themselves, and among the many organizations to which he belonged were the Auburn Host Lions Club, the Placer Shriners, the Masons and the Elks. He held many offices within the Lions Club and was a past president as well as past zone and region chairman of District 4-C5. He served on the Board of Directors and as their bulletin editor for many years.

As an active member of the Auburn Investment Club he provided many keen insights. He was very active in his church, St. Luke’s Episcopal, until his illness prevented him from attending as often as he would have liked. Fishing and hiking were among his passions when younger, and he enjoyed exploring the back country of California’s mountains with family and friends.

Lake Tahoe was another very special place in his life, and many happy days were spent there with the people who were important to him. He loved cooking and was famous for his chili. After retirement it became a favorite activity of his. As time took away his physical abilities, Don enjoyed learning about computers, and spent time tracking down lost family and friends whenever able. Reading was a favorite pastime of his; he always enjoyed the learning process and never quit adding to his knowledge.

Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice; his daughter Donna (Fred) Hunt of Sierra Vista, AZ; his son Donald J. Everltts, Jr of Wilson WY; three grandchildren Jessica (Leo) Pederson of Polheim,  Germany, Heather Hunt of Sierra Vista, and Skyler Everitts of Wilson. He is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Kaleen Hunt of Sierra Vista and Novotny Pederson of Germany; his sister Ruth Noell of Tenmile, OR, and his nephew Mike Noell of Reno, NV.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on March 17, 2006 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Auburn, CA. In lieu of flower, the family requests donations to St. Luke’s, the American Cancer Society or a  favorite charity. Arrangements by Chapel of the Hills.

Remembrances from Auburn Host Lions Club Members

Don Accepting a plaque honoring his contribution to Lions in January 2006

Since I was the first woman member of the Auburn Host Lions, Don seemed less than thrilled that my addition would break with tradition. He liked to tease but eventually he accepted my presence gracefully. We will all miss his enthusiasm, attitude, and his version of the Pledge to Allegiance " and to the republicans for which it stands..."                                                                                                               —     Lion Colleen Conley

Don had his own pledge of allegiance, "and to the Republicans, for which it stands, one nation, under God . . ."

                                                                                                                                         —      Lion Jim Luttrell

To the very end, it was great to see Don trying to make every meeting. Riding that chair bugged him I'm sure, but you know he valued being there and enjoying the camaraderie. Go Bears.

                                                                                                                                     —     Lion Tom Johnson

I have truly enjoyed knowing Lion Don. I had been told that he was famous for his chili, and twice I had the opportunity to attest to that when he so graciously opened up his home to us.

                                                                                                                                     —     Lion Nicole Byers

Don was masterful at fixing Tri-Tip dinners and leftovers for breakfast at our camp outs for Tevis. With a little Wild Turkey in the evening, he would tell us about his oil days in Taft & Maricopa. Don was an exceptional Lion and guided our club in the right direction during his tenure as president & board member. We’ll miss you Mr. Republican !!!

                                                                                                                                                 —     Lion Pip Stoutenburg

I will always remember Don for his optimism, lack of complaining, zodiac insults and his modification of the Pledge.

                                                                                                                                      —     Lion Lant Barney

I'll always remember the day that Robert, Don, Bud, & myself, rang the bell for the Salvation Army.

                                                                                                                                 —     Lion Bob Mock

My favorite memory of Don is the pledge of allegiance, when he would say "to the Republicans for which it stands".  He was fined two dollars every time he did it, but he would have the money already in his hand.  He had me saying it and paying his fine when he wasn't able to be at the meeting.  The week he passed away, Dayton Koch and I said it in his memory and paid the fine for him for the last time.
